a good day

it was a cloudy hobart morning that wednesday and i paced until i thought i'd worn a new path in my kitchen in anticipation of Charlotte and Lisa's arrival.

today our home would be photographed for an upcoming edition of Country Style, a magazine that had been a regular in my house growing up (my mum the avid gardner and rainy day decorator/home maker)

the tummy churned with excitement and some nerves, would they be unimpressed by the sloping floor of the little lounge, the hodgepodge dinnerware or the one too many paint chips on the dining table - all things i loved about our home but was unsure would be 'photo ready'.

Charlotte, our friend and stylist for the shoot, arrived with hugs and an energy to match our excitement -  we put the kettle on. soon after Lisa and helper Matt arrived. i breathed a sigh of relief, for not more than ten minutes had passed before cups of tea had been shared, and stories exchanged about our love of the island, travel, food and family. for a moment i forgot our reason for all gathering in our small kitchen. it was going to be a good day.

i was in awe of Lisa's process, the time she took, the respect and relationship she had with the tiniest object. it was fascinating. i was truly warmed by their affection for our things and our home (even the chipped painted table!)

after treats from Pigeon Hole cafe, one too many cups of tea, and a visit from our lovely interviewer Amanda (whose words gave perfect context to the pictures) the afternoon light dimmed and the day had finally come to an end.

by witnessing the three documenting our house and its contents, i got to fall in love with it all over again, through an outsider's eyes.

garden on the inside

having lived in many rentals i've developed a love for the potted plant, mostly the beautifully generous succulent. each house move carries memories of hauling these various pots to their new home. even now when we are lucky to have landed a home with a lovely garden i still have a soft spot for my collection of indoor friends.

some spill out onto the doorstep to the garden..

for the love of white

for as long as i can remember i've dreamed of owning a white bedroom, a place where you felt instantly rested and quiet. the other rooms in our home hold colour and clutter but this room doesn't need much at all - white walls and the white boat (our name for the bed).

this autumnal light

a sun filled autumn day in hobart can sometimes feel warmer than summer, with the sun sitting a little lower, the light catches even the most ordinary of things and turns them a little bit magic.

hello.

today i decided to make a blog, a place where i can share my love for making a home a happy one. more often than not these pages will be filled with pictures of found objects, imagined interiors and the occasional seasonal sky.

this blog will be a glimpse into my decorated world, and those things placed on the windowsill are for everyone to see.
